In chapter 5, the authors discuss analysis of argument. They state that the analysis of an argument is necessary in order to discover the issues, and what arguments and support are most important for the claim. Analysis also examines what is being argued and what is needed in order to gain adherence. Chapter 5 also further discusses the analysis of argumentation as it examines the analysis of claims. The authors state that when analyzing a claim, it is important to evaluate each claim and then find the point at which the claim is vulnerable for a rebuttal. It is also important to locate the point of disagreement over it and evaluate the support for the argument.
I found it interesting to read about the evaluation of arguments because during arguments I often find myself evaluating what the other person is arguing in order to evaluate whether or not I should believe them or agree with them. I also found it interesting how the book discussed that the most vulnerable part of a claim gives fuel for a rebuttal because often times I will be arguing with my brother and he will state a rebuttal at the weakest point of my argument. Furthermore, I agree with the authors that it is important to evaluate the support for the argument because if the support is not credible or is false, then the listener will not be persuaded by the claim. Overall, I found chapter 5 to be very interesting and applicable to daily life as many of us are constantly analyzing arguments in order to make the best decisions.
